Counting backwards
Which kind of day is being counted?
The three families above answer three different questions, and mixing them up is the usual source of a missed deadline.
Calendar days run straight through weekends and public holidays. A clause that says “30 days” with nothing else attached means calendar days.
Weeks are whole multiples of seven days, so the answer always falls on the same weekday as today. That is what makes weeks the right unit for anything with a fixed slot in the week.
Business days count Monday to Friday only. Ten business days is fourteen calendar days from a weekday start, so the wording is worth four extra days. None of these pages remove public holidays, because they differ by country, state and employer — subtract one working day for each holiday your own calendar observes.
If your count starts on a date other than today, or mixes units, the date calculator takes any start date and adds or subtracts days, weeks, months and years. To measure a gap that already exists, days between dates reports it in days, weeks, months and working days.
