How to use the date duration calculator

Choose your start date and end date in the two boxes. The duration appears instantly — there's no button to press and nothing is sent anywhere.

The headline shows the span as whole years, months and days, the way durations are usually said out loud. Below it you'll see the total number of days, the number of weeks (with any leftover days), and the count of business days — weekdays from Monday to Friday, with weekends left out.

By default the count measures the gap between the two dates, so a Monday-to-Tuesday range is one day. Tick “Include the end date” when you want the final day counted too — useful for things like counting the days of a trip or a project inclusively.

Need a future or past date instead? Use the add or subtract days box: pick a starting date and type a number of days. A positive number jumps forward; a negative one goes back.

Everything runs in your browser using your device's clock — the dates you enter are never uploaded.

Common date duration questions

How many days are between two dates? Pick the two dates and read the “Total days” figure. It's the exact whole-day difference in your local time zone.

Should I include the end date? Leave it off to measure the gap between the dates; turn it on to count the last day as well, for example when counting the days of a stay or an event.

What is a business day? Any weekday, Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. Public holidays are not removed, since they differ from place to place.

Why doesn't the years/months/days breakdown match the total days? They describe the same span two ways: the total is one running day count, while the breakdown groups it into full years, then months, then days.

What if my end date is earlier than my start date? The tool still shows the size of the gap and notes that the dates run backwards, so you always get an answer.
