Cups to grams (approximate)

Volume and weight aren't the same — a cup of flour weighs less than a cup of sugar. These are approximate guides for common ingredients and will vary with packing and brand.

How to use the cooking converter

Pick a category, type an amount, and choose the units. The answer appears instantly — there's no button to press and nothing leaves your device.

Volume to volume (cups, tablespoons, teaspoons, fluid ounces, pints, quarts, gallons, millilitres, litres) and weight to weight (ounces, pounds, grams, kilograms) are exact conversions.

Oven temperature converts between Fahrenheit and Celsius, and shows the nearest UK gas mark where one applies. For example, 350°F is about 176.7°C, which is roughly gas mark 4.

We don't convert volume straight to weight by default. A cup is a measure of space, while a gram is a measure of weight, so the answer depends on the ingredient. The "cups to grams" helper above gives approximate weights for a few common items only.

Everything runs in your browser — the numbers you type are never uploaded.

Common cooking conversion questions

How many ml are in a cup? One US cup is 236.588 ml. Half a cup is about 118 ml and a quarter cup is about 59 ml.

How many teaspoons are in a tablespoon? Exactly 3. So 1 tablespoon equals 3 teaspoons, and 1 teaspoon is one third of a tablespoon.

What is 350°F in Celsius? About 176.7°C, roughly gas mark 4. To convert °F to °C, subtract 32 then multiply by 5/9. To go the other way, multiply by 9/5 then add 32.

How many grams in a pound? One pound is 453.592 grams, and one ounce is 28.35 grams. There are 16 ounces in a pound.

Can I convert cups to grams? Only roughly, because it depends on the ingredient. A cup of all-purpose flour is about 120 g, a cup of granulated sugar is about 200 g, and a cup of water is about 237 g. Use the approximate helper above for common ingredients.

How many tablespoons are in a stick of butter? One standard US stick of butter is 8 tablespoons, which is half a cup, 4 ounces, or about 113 grams. Two sticks make one cup. Most stick wrappers print tablespoon marks so you can slice off exactly what a recipe needs.

What's the difference between a US cup and a metric cup? A US cup is 236.6 ml, while the metric cup used in much of the world is a round 250 ml, and an old UK imperial cup is about 284 ml. The difference is small for most cooking but can matter in baking, so check which standard a recipe uses. This converter uses the US cup.

How do I scale a recipe up or down? Use the recipe scaler above: enter one ingredient amount and choose half, double, triple, or custom servings. For custom servings, divide the new serving count by the original to get the multiplier, then apply it to every ingredient. Cooking times change less than amounts, so adjust them gradually and check for doneness.
