Average Calculator

Paste or type a list of numbers and instantly get the mean (average), median, mode, range, sum, count, and standard deviation. Separate values with commas, spaces, or new lines. Everything is calculated in your browser — nothing is uploaded.

    How to find the average

The mean — what most people call the average — is the sum of all your numbers divided by how many there are. Add them up, divide by the count, and that's it. This calculator does that as you type, and also works out the other averages people often need.

Median. Sort the numbers from low to high and take the middle one. If there's an even number of values, the median is the average of the two in the middle. The median is handy when a few unusually large or small values would drag the mean in a misleading direction.

Mode. The value that shows up most often. A list can have more than one mode if several values tie, or no mode at all if every value is unique.

Range and spread. The range is the largest value minus the smallest. Standard deviation goes further and measures how tightly the numbers cluster around the mean — a small standard deviation means they're close together, a large one means they're scattered.

Everything runs in your browser — the numbers you type are never uploaded.

    Average calculator questions

How do I calculate the average? Add all the numbers to get the sum, then divide by how many there are. The result is the mean. This page does it instantly and shows the median and mode alongside it.

What's the difference between mean, median, and mode? The mean is the everyday average. The median is the middle value once the list is sorted. The mode is the most frequent value. They often differ when the data is skewed.

How should I separate the numbers? Use commas, spaces, tabs, or new lines — any mix is fine. You can paste a column straight from a spreadsheet. Negatives, decimals, and scientific notation are all accepted.

What is standard deviation? It measures how spread out the values are around the mean. This tool reports both the population version (divide by N) and the sample version (divide by N − 1).

Can there be more than one mode? Yes — if several values tie for most frequent, all are reported. If every value appears once, there is no mode.
