How to use the word counter

Type directly into the box or paste text from anywhere — a document, an email, a social post. Every count updates instantly as you go; there's no button to press and nothing leaves your device.

Words counts each run of letters or numbers separated by a space, tab, or line break. Extra spacing never changes the total.

Characters (with spaces) is the full length of your text, including spaces and line breaks — this is the count most platforms use for limits. Characters (no spaces) leaves whitespace out.

Sentences counts text that ends in a period, question mark, or exclamation mark. Paragraphs counts blocks of text separated by a blank line.

Reading time assumes about 200 words a minute, the average silent reading speed. Speaking time assumes about 130 words a minute, a steady out-loud pace — handy for timing a speech or presentation.

Everything runs in your browser — the text you type or paste is never uploaded.

Common questions

How does the counter handle extra spaces and line breaks? It ignores them for the word count — two spaces between words still count as one separator, so pasted text is counted accurately.

Which character count do social media and forms use? Most use characters with spaces. If a limit says it ignores spaces, use the "no spaces" figure instead.

How accurate is the reading time? It's an estimate. People read at different speeds, but 200 words per minute is a widely used average for everyday text.

Is anything saved or uploaded? No. The tool is fully client-side — your text never leaves your browser and nothing is stored.
