What this estimate doesn't include: Local income taxes are not included. New York City and Yonkers local income taxes are NOT included. NY's tax-benefit recapture (which phases out lower-bracket benefit for high earners) is not modeled. 2026 rates are statutory (FY2026 budget); thresholds pending the official 2026 IT-201-I. City, county or school-district income taxes where they apply, court-ordered deductions, union dues, and anything else your specific employer withholds are not in this figure; your pay stub is the authority on those.

NY Paid Family Leave and NY State Disability Insurance: what else New York takes from your check

Beyond income tax, New York withholds these state payroll programs directly from employee wages:

ProgramEmployee rate (2026)Wage base / cap
NY Paid Family Leave (PFL) — employee-funded0.432% of gross wages per pay periodCapped at $411.91/yr (based on 2026 NYSAWW of $1,833.63)
NY State Disability Insurance (SDI/DBL) — employee share0.5% of wagesCapped at $0.60/week ($31.20/yr); employer pays the balance

Included in your take-home: the NY PFL, NY DBL contributions are subtracted from the take-home estimate at the top of this page. These are withheld after tax and do not lower your taxable income.

Two New York payroll quirks worth knowing

  • New York is one of the few states where employees pay BOTH a Paid Family Leave deduction (0.432%, up to $411.91/yr in 2026) and a State Disability deduction (0.5%, capped at just $0.60/week) — two separate line items on the paycheck.
  • Where you LIVE inside New York changes withholding sharply: NYC residents owe an extra city income tax (~3.08%–3.88%) and Yonkers residents owe a ~1.96% surcharge — neither applies if you live elsewhere in the state, even if you commute in.

Beyond the paycheck: New York's 4% sales tax and property tax

Sales tax4% (≈8.54% with local)
Property tax≈1.3% — One of the higher effective property-tax rates nationally (~9th-highest by Tax Foundation, ~1.26–1.30%). Wide variation: ~0.56% in Brooklyn/Kings Co. to >2% in some upstate counties.

New York's own $17.00 minimum wage — above the federal floor (2026)

$17.00/hour (≈$35,360/year full-time). $17.00 in NYC, Long Island (Nassau/Suffolk) and Westchester; $16.00 in the rest of NY State. Effective Jan 1, 2026; indexed to inflation starting 2027.

Is overtime and tips tax-free in New York? Federally yes; New York's state treatment is mixed

Federal law lets you deduct qualified tips and overtime premium pay from 2025 through 2028 (OBBBA caps & rules), though Social Security and Medicare are still withheld.

New York state income tax: New York adopted its own 'no tax on tips' break in the FY2027 budget (signed May 28, 2026): up to $25,000 of tipped income is excluded from New York State income tax for tax years beginning in and after 2026, mirroring the federal rule. Overtime was NOT included — the federal overtime deduction reduces your federal tax only, and 2025 tips got no state relief. (source: budget.ny.gov)

  • Overtime: 2025 — not deductible on your New York return (still state-taxed); 2026–2028 — not deductible on your New York return (still state-taxed).
  • Tips: 2025 — not deductible on your New York return (still state-taxed); 2026–2028 — deductible on your New York return too.
