This is for general information only and is not medical advice — talk to your doctor. BMI is a quick screening number that does not account for muscle, body composition, age, sex, or ethnicity, and these adult categories do not apply to children or teens.
How to use the BMI calculator
Choose your units, then type your height and weight. Your BMI, weight category, and the healthy weight range for your height appear instantly — there's no button to press and nothing is sent anywhere.
Metric. Enter your height in centimetres and your weight in kilograms.
Imperial. Enter your height in feet and inches and your weight in pounds.
Everything runs in your browser — the numbers you type are never uploaded.
What the BMI categories mean
Body Mass Index sorts adults into four standard CDC weight categories based on the ratio of weight to height:
- Underweight: BMI below 18.5
- Normal (healthy weight): BMI 18.5 to 24.9
- Overweight: BMI 25 to 29.9
- Obese: BMI 30 or higher
Common BMI questions
How is BMI calculated? In metric, divide your weight in kilograms by the square of your height in metres. In imperial, multiply your weight in pounds by 703 and divide by the square of your height in inches.
What is a healthy BMI? For adults, a BMI between 18.5 and 24.9 is generally considered a healthy weight.
Is BMI accurate for everyone? No. BMI is a general screening tool, not a diagnosis. Very muscular people, older adults, and others can be misclassified because BMI does not measure body fat directly.
Does BMI work for children? No. This tool uses adult categories. Children and teens are assessed with age- and sex-specific BMI-for-age percentiles instead.
What is the healthy weight range for my height? It's the range that gives a BMI of 18.5 to 24.9 for your height. Enter your height and the calculator shows that range so you can compare it with your current weight. This is general guidance only — ask your doctor what's right for you.
